Epanomi is a place of great environmental interest. The wetland of 550 hectare in the area of Fanari is protected by Natura 2000 (European Ecological Network), hosting rare species of Fauna and frora . According to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki’s research, the most important habitat type in Epanomi wetland which needs immediate protection is the “fixed dunes with herbaceous vegetation” since they have the most desirable structure and pattern at the landscape level, the highest patch type diversity and the second highest plant diversity.
